This article will mainly talk about making a food shelf inaccessible to normal customers & why you should do that, as well as how to optimize king Reinhold food sales!
Unreachable Food Stuff
First off, let’s talk about why we want to do this. Why should we make a shelf inaccessible to normal customers? The reason is simple, it’s to prevent customers from buying the items on the shelves.
But Yuki, why do we want to prevent customers from buying the items on the shelves? It’s simple! Meals & Desserts can be purchased by customers as a second sale on top of their regular purchase even if the meal/dessert is in a shelf that’s inaccessible to regular customers!
By putting all our meal/desserts in a shelf that regular customers can’t access, this will prevent them from buying meals/dessert as their first purchase and limit it to second purchases only.
This in turn will lead to increased sales per hour because the same customer has a chance to buy something from us twice. By preventing it from being their first sale, we also increase the amount of second sales we make because the meal/dessert won’t run out as fast.
But the question now becomes, how should we make the shelf inaccessible? Do we just block access to it and that’s it? Well, yes but that’s not the full story! The first step is to make it inaccessible but that isn’t the only step to take!
How to properly make it inaccessible
The way to make anything inaccessible to customers is to make sure that a customer isn’t able to touch the furniture.
There are two main ways that you can do this.
1. You can either put the shelf behind a wall that they cannot cross as shown in the first example picture or
2. Make sure the shelf is barricaded by other furniture to make sure not a single tile is exposed such as this example picture by naggert.

Filtering the Shelf
After you’ve made the shelf inaccessible, the last step is to filter the shelf to make sure only meals/desserts go to this shelf and no other shelf! This is simpler than you think. Here is a step by step guide to do this:
Step 1: Select the inaccessible shelf

Step 2: Click on “Content”

Step 3: Click on the cog

Note: This part won’t make sense but just trust me
Step 4: Make sure Meal & Dessert are both not selected. Apply to all shelves is selected. Then click on apply.

Step 5: This time, make sure only meal and desserts are selected. Do NOT select apply to all shelves. Then click on apply.

If you did this correctly, then you should have the following:

All your normal shelves for normal sales

Your food shelf/shelves
For those wondering why I did step 4, that’s to make sure every other shelf cannot get meals/desserts and all meals/desserts will be filtered to this shelf only.
Extra Sale to the King
Want to scam sell stuff to King Reinhold even more? Reinhold also has a chance to buy an additional meal/dessert item after the normal purchase that he makes. But there is a more optimal way of doing this.
Optimal Method (Ignore the bounty part of the video, I was checking to see if there was a “Sell Valuable Items” bounty available)
Steps
- Make sure your superior/flawless/epic/legendary meal/desserts are locked.
- Click on the exclamation mark so Reinhold would select what he wants to purchase.
- If you own Kaipo, sell the first item before proceeding to step 4
- Exit the sale and unlock your meal/dessert
- Put the meal/dessert on a shelf
- Sell the normal item to the king
- Hope he wants to buy a meal/dessert
Why do this?
If you leave the food unlocked on the shelf as he comes in, he may buy that as his 1st purchase instead and then leave.
If you have Kaipo and put the food on the shelf before you make the first sale, his 2nd sale could be the food item instead of the normal item you wanted to sell him so you miss out on a sale entirely!
If you get lucky and trigger food + food sale, that’s great! But I found that people usually prefer a normal sale + food sale.
Kaipo Trick
An additional trick for King sales is that you can force whatever you want the King to buy without going through the hassle of king baiting. Credits to Reiga for this method!
Steps:
- King walks in and picks an item
- Before you sell it to him, you remove all other quality items from your shelves except the most valuable one that you want to sell him
- Once you hit sell on the first item he’s guaranteed to pick that second item. So you can force him to buy valuable items without the suggest talent from barter tree while being far less annoying about than normal kingbaiting
Special Note: This method applies to champion as well with regards to their food trigger – you can put it out after they’ve arrived to try and trigger their bonus sale, the meal/dessert doesn’t have to already be on display when they walk in but only at the moment that you make the sale happen.

That kaipo trick is next level… I assumed the king picked everything already as soon as he spawned. Also, for those who care, desserts usually give 75%-100% more merchant XP than meals.
I was told that he does pick the purchase when he comes in, but that doesn’t apply to second purchases with Kaipo or food sales!
Great strategy, thanks!
This doesn’t work for me. I’ve talked to people before about my shelving stuff and been told that I can’t count on it being this way where inaccessible things are not asked for so I’m kind of confused.
You need to set it as a meal/dessert rack. Only those two item lines can work for secondary sales.
