There are two consistent ways of acquiring skill die which are
– Fuse them through full moon fusion
– On the reward track for the tower of titans event.

Other ways to acquire them are
– In-game shop & bought for using gems
– Sometimes given for free from the web-store weekly giveaways (Every Thursday at 12:00a.m. UTC+0 OR piggy bank reset)
– Sometimes in the reward track for content passes (Credits to Lebronco)
– Oscar sales if you have his chase card maxed at level 2
– May appear in the daily login rewards that Kabam hosts every once in a while

Roland Usage

What is Roland’s Ability

Roland is a paid worker that you can only obtain by purchasing him for real money.

His ability lets you select any skill of your choice, for any skill slot that you want, for every hero that you own. The only condition is that you must not have already used his ability for that hero.

This means that you can use his ability on a new hero you just hired or even a hero that’s already level 40 with all four skills. There is no limit to the number of uses you have with Roland. You can technically hire a new hero, use his ability then retire the hero as many times as you want (But why would you do this, I have no idea!)

How to Use Roland’s Ability Optimally

Something important to note right away is that you don’t need to use Roland immediately. Another key thing to note is that you should use his ability near the end. This is after you’ve seen the hero’s full natural skillset.

You can only use his ability to choose a skill ONCE per hero so there is zero harm in holding onto that until you’re absolutely sure you know what you want to do with it.

When you are ready, Roland’s three best use cases are these situations:

  1. When a hero is basically done. They’re one skill away from perfection and you will never touch their skillset again. This should be the final thing you do – roll for any other skills you want FIRST and then use Roland to finish them off. It’s highly recommended that you use the Hero and Quest Simulator here (Alternate link). Need a guide for the quest sim? Click me
  2. If you don’t care about having truly perfect skillsets, then Roland is a good option to get the hero to a good place to where they won’t have any issues clearing content.
  3. You know for a fact you’re going to fire the hero at some point. In this case, the single use per hero restriction doesn’t matter because you’re not keeping them anyway. Here, it’s a good idea to swap out one skill to get a really strong one so the hero will be a better workhorse in the time you have them.
Skill Blocks

Some skills can block other skills. If a skill is blocked, it will not appear in the pool at all and is physically impossible to roll. If you check the Reroll Odds tooltip ingame, the blocked skill(s) will be missing from the list. The following skills block other skills:

If two skills share the same icon. (S1 & S2) or (S3 & S4) [There are more examples]

If the hero already has a common weapon skill, they can’t get another common weapon skill

Note: Very old heroes can have two common weapon skills

If the hero already has an epic weapon skill, they can’t roll another one

Exceptions/Notes

Skills that offer the same stat combination but use a different icon do not block each other

You can roll a Common and an Epic weapon skill on the same set

One-Dice Check (ODC)

Essentially, a one-dice check is a quick test for heroes who are of a questionable viability to see if they’re worth further investment or not. This is performed by throwing one single T1 die at them to reroll their first slot once. Hence, ‘one-dice check’: it refers to both the slot and the investment.

We do this because oftentimes a set has one or two really powerful skills but part of it is junk. Refer to the example below

Double Cast is extraordinarily useful by itself so that plus another decent skill is usually enough to warrant keeping. The rest of the set is pretty awful, but you have good potential which is the crucial part. You do NOT want to do a one-dice check on a hero with no potential.

If it was this setup instead, you would throw them straight into the garbage because you do not have any potential in the hero.

How do we do a one-dice check? This is the simple part: use one single die on them.
– If you get a good skill, great! They’re now a keeper. You will very likely need to reroll something else as well.
– If you don’t get anything useful, no problem. You were going to fire them anyway.
– If they get another questionable skill, then DO NOT waste further resources. Get rid of them. Don’t fall into the trap of sunk cost.

This is done because a single T1 die is relatively inexpensive. For the cost of 20 Perfect Moonstones, you potentially receive a permanent hero. On the flipside, if you DON’T get a good hero out of it, you barely lost anything. It’s a very low-cost test with high potential rewards.

Now, why don’t we want to do this for any other slots? Why is slot 1 the only one? Simple – because a T2, T3, or T4 die are much more expensive to make. A single T2 costs double that of a T1, T3 is 4x a T1, and T4s are 8x.

You can kiiinda get away with rolling a later slot in the same way as a one-dice check, but it’s much less efficient. What makes a one-dice check so useful is that it’s a quick and cheap test and that falls off the more you’re investing in it.

Spending on T4 die on a hero who you might not even keep means you’re throwing away a whopping eight slot 1 rerolls for heroes you know you want to keep around.

Common Strategies for Hero Rehiring/Rerolling

I won’t go too in-depth on hero rehiring methods and will only briefly talk about them. This is mostly a guide on skill rerolling/roland usage after all!

Functional Heroes (Early-game)

Just reroll for any two skills that match what the hero wants to do. This can be done by levelling them naturally or using Argon’s Finest (Talent in the questing tree)

They want to tank? Any two defensive skills. They want to deal damage? Any two offensive skills (Note that a purely defensive skill for attackers is still a good idea)

Example: (Do NOT reroll until you get these two skills specifically, these are just examples)

Good Heroes (Mid-game)

This method targets for a good/great set and doesn’t require a lot of investments. This will get you a hero that is functional and works well into the late/end game.

You want to rehire heroes until you get a good S2 while ensuring that S1 is still decent/functional.

You’ll want to check S3 and S4 after this then decide if the hero is worth keeping in the long term or not. Do not decide this based on the faces you see or skill rarity!

Target the following:
Tanks: Defensive skills/Hybrid attack skills
Rogues: Weapon skill/Bonus attack skill/Crit skill/Evasion/(Optional) Defensive skill
Spellcasters: Weapon skill/Bonus attack skill/Crit skills/(Optional) Defensive skill

Example: (Do NOT reroll until you get these two skills specifically, these are just examples)

Great but lazy (Late/End-game)

This method targets a great (With some luck, perfect too) set without you having to spend hours rerolling a single hero till you get the start you want.

The main thing to note is that you want to target a perfect S2 while completely ignoring S1. If you get a great skill at 23, then continue to 35 and just reroll S1 down the line.

Example: (Do NOT reroll until you get these two skills specifically, these are just examples)

Perfect with effort (End-game)

Disclaimer: You do NOT need perfect heroes to clear all content in the game. You can clear Ancient Jungle on Extreme difficulty if you have heroes under “Good” category as long as you’re giving them the right equipment, spirits, and promotion (No legendary gear needed)

Advantage:
– Doesn’t require Mundra and uses minimal die
– Only requires gold & time spent rehiring

Disadvantage:
– Requires Roland or great luck to be optimal
– Very time consuming
– A lot of effort spent rehiring heroes
– Higher risk of retiring an existing hero when continuously rehiring heroes by accident (Send heroes to quest to prevent this)

This method will truly test your patience and resources available to you (Time, gold, sanity, patience) where you will continuously reroll till you get the “perfect” start.

I highly highly discourage you from using this method unless your roster is already in a very strong position and you’re able to spend hours to reroll hundreds/thousands of times to get the “ideal” start.

Once you get the perfect start, you will level the hero to 23/35 to check S3/S4. If it’s a T1-T2 hero, then promote. If it’s a T3-T4 hero, then check S3 and decide. If it’s a T5+ hero, then level to 35 to check up to S4.

If S3/S4 are both bad, then you will either start over again or reroll S4 with die that you get from tower of titans until you hit the skill you want. Once you do, if you have Roland then use his ability on S3 to complete the hero.

Example: (Do NOT reroll until you get these two skills specifically, these are just examples)

Perfect but lazy (End-game)

Disclaimer: You do NOT need perfect heroes to clear all content in the game. You can clear Ancient Jungle on Extreme difficulty if you have heroes under “Good” category as long as you’re giving them the right equipment, spirits, and promotion (No legendary gear needed)

Advantage:
– Absolutely minimal hero rehiring, once you get a perfect S2 you will be done with rehiring

Disadvantage:
– Requires Roland/Mundra or both to be optimal
– A lot of time spent crafting/fusing die

Rehire until you hit a perfect S2. Level to 35 while ignoring everything else. These are what you want to do with the remaining skill slots:

S1 – Craft perfect moonstones or buy from market, then fuse into basic skill die and reroll until perfection

S3 – Wait until S1/S2/S4 are done before using Roland’s ability

S4 – Use die obtained from tower of titans and reroll until perfection.

FAQ

Question: If I fire a hero and hire a new hero, can I use Roland’s ability on the new hero?
Answer: Yes, you can. Roland’s ability is only limited to once per hero. Retiring a hero and hiring a new one would mean that you are getting an entirely new hero.

Question: Which skill slot should I use Roland’s ability for?
Answer: It depends on which slot you have that gets the biggest boost from Roland’s ability! But if we’re being technical about it, then slot 3 is usually the hardest slot to roll using dice so you’ll want to use it for that slot (Assuming it is a slot with a bad skill of course)

I’m not sure if this is noteworthy, but dice also seem to be pretty common in content pass reward tracks.
In any case, another great article!
